1.       What is the problem being described?  Identify the thesis.  Is it placed so as to help you know what to expect in the rest of the paper?  (If the thesis doesn’t appear until the end, does the paper build to that conclusion?)  Did you have trouble identifying it?

2.     Does the paper flow logically from the thesis?  Are there any issues in the paper that are not covered by the thesis?  If so, what?

3.     Does the paper contain enough background information for you to understand the problem being presented?

4.     Could you follow the paper? If there were places where you got lost, identify them by paragraph number.  (Yes, this means that you may have to number the paragraphs as you go along.)

5.     Evaluate the introduction.  How does the writer introduce the topic (i.e. what technique is being used?)? Does the introduction lead effectively into the paper?  How might the introduction be improved?

6.     Does the conclusion end the paper effectively?  How might it be improved?

7.     Are there any places where the paper seems to stray off-topic?  “Off-topic” includes wandering into solutions.  If so, where?  Indicate the paragraph number.

8.     Is there any point at which you want more information?

10.  Check the paper for coherence.  Are appropriate transitions used within and between paragraphs? If there is a place at which you aren’t sure how the ideas are connected (even if you agree that the ideas are related), place a question mark in the left-hand margin.  (If you’re working with an electronic version of the paper, highlight the problem area.)

11.  Are the sources integrated smoothly into the flow of the paper?  If there is a place where you think a source might be worked in more smoothly, identify it. If every paragraph features several sentences that begin with “According to,” work on integrating that source in some other way.

15.  Proofread the paper for errors.  Do not make any corrections, but note any grammatical or mechanical errors in the right-hand margins of the paper.
