InactiveThroughout the novel, it becomes evident that Sara Louise felt jealous of her sister because she received all the attention from her parents because she was more delicate and needy. However, at the same time Sara did not want to be at all like her sister or even associate herself with her, which eventually becomes a fater compells her to leave the island later.

Inactivelel pressed send by accident so what I was trying to say at the end is… it eventually becomes a factor to why she leaves the island.
On the other hand, Lynn and Katie have a good relationship, but when Lynn dies, Katie has to go through family struggles on her own, without the comfort of Lynn. This causes Katie to mature and grow.
Why did each pair of sisters treat each other so differently?

All the lessons and information Lynn had taught Katie prepared her to help her family. She matured after Sammy\’s accident and Lynn\’s death. However, I would not go as far to say that she felt mature, but that she felt responsible because she was the second oldest child.

If Lynn and Caroline had changed, it would have been detrimental to Katie\’s and Sara\’s maturing process. The fact that they acted the way they did shaped the way they handled situations in the future. Their maturity develops from the way they treated their sisters.July 30 at 9:36 pm #6139Gianna

“Do you think that Katie felt more mature because she took the initiative to rebuild her family?”Yes, I think that Katie felt more mature. Lynn had been the oldest sibling until her passing. After that, Katie was the one that had to take responsibility for herself and Sammy. This was a major sign of her growing up. She kept her family from falling apart following the death of her sister. She was not going to allow this tragedy to tear them down, because they needed to move on, were going to move on, no matter how hard it would be.

“Why did each pair of sisters treat each other so differently?”Caroline is the epitome of perfection. Sara Louise is not. They are on completely opposite sides of the spectrum, perhaps to the point that they cannot see the other had they looked across. Caroline’s perfection is what draws all the attention to her, and Sara Louise is left in the shadows. This causes Sara Louise to hate her sister.
On the other hand, Lynn and Katie are very close. They are very alike, and I think this is because Lynn taught Katie many things, so Katie looked up to her. There was a mutual love for each other throughout the book that never went away. Even when times got rough, they still understood that they were each other’s best friend—and always would be.

MemberIn Jacob Have I Loved, Caroline comes to life with how perfect she is. She is the complete opposite of Sara Louise, and Sara Louise hates her for it. All the attention is focused on her. However, I also think that Caroline is brought to life with the fact that she does not gloat on it. She does not rub in Sara Louise’s face that she is getting all the attention. Even when Sara Louise is mean to her, she is kind in return. Instead of getting angry, as would be the expected response, Caroline does not lash out.
In Kira-Kira, Lynn is brought to life with her relationship with Katie. Even when the road became bumpy here and there, at the end of the day, they were sisters, they were best friends. Katie looked up to Lynn and admired her because she was so smart. When Lynn became ill, Katie was saddened greatly, and worked hard to make Lynn’s life easier. After seeing their relationship throughout the book, Lynn’s passing is a terrible tragedy. Katie has lost the one person that has taught her so many things.
Would things have turned out differently for Sara Louise if Caroline had fought back?

In Jacob Have I Loved, one of the main characters, Caroline, came to life by her well established personality that can be perceived as \”fun to be around\”, or completely resistible, as in Sarah Louise\’s opinion. I believe the author used a various amount of talents and gave them to Caroline so that the readers may relate to that characters actions, feelings, and thoughts. By the author creating Caroline as an authentic and unique individual, it was easy to perceive the lessons she taught. The author of Kira-Kira, Cynthia Kadahata, illustrated a community which was realistically discriminating. This vitally affected Lynn\’s life and character, as well as the lesson of the story. I believe that this static character evolved from tragedy. In this novel, the moment when Lynn discovered her family had been forced to leave their hometown to Georgia, she realized she had no other option but to make new friends. This change as a result of her father\’s relocation for his job is a relatable situation to many people today. It created a sense of compassion and sympathy for her family, which was the author\’s intent while writing this book. By both of these novels including static characters such as Lynn and Caroline, their relationship with their sisters was crucial in the realization that: family is a blessing that should not be taken for granted. My question is: Do you think that the people who were familiar with these quarrelling siblings had any hope for them or did they feel that there was nothing in their destiny that could be changed?RE: haileighh \”At what point did Katie and Sara Louise become dynamic? What was the change?\”
The life of Katie was dramatically changed when her sister, Lynn, met a new friend and paid less attention to her as a sister should. Katie felt she was insignificant, useless, and a burden to her family and changed into a pessimistic and unloving person. On the contrary, Sarah Louise underwent a change in character which was a result of her relationship with her sister. From the beginning until almost the end of this book, Sara Louise was filled with resentment and frustration towards her sister, Caroline, who did nothing wrong at all. Sara based her emotions and actions on her heart filled with envy and strife. It was a long, difficult process before the two sisters relationship was restored and united.RE: jessicaduran: \”Would you say that Caroline and Lynn had to be broken or brought to a point of need and humility in order for the main characters Katie and Sara Louise to mature?\”
I know for a fact that these breaking points were very much needed for these characters to mature. Just like any other average, imperfect human, we all need to experience these times of testing on order to realize what needs to be improved in ourselves. By these characters encountering events which were discouraging, fearful, and distressed, I believe they truly were beneficial to their lives. It made them develop into caring and independent people who saw life in a whole new way.July 30 at 10:19 pm #6142rapunzel15

Would things have turned out differently for Sara Louise if Caroline had fought back?
I think that Sara Louise would have been more content with herself if Caroline fought back. She would have felt as if she had hit a nerve in Caroline, and she would have been pleased that she caused her sister displeasure. It probably would have been better if they fought together so they could both get their feelings out and not keep them inside. Sara Louise and Caroline probably would have ended up feeling bad about it later and apologizing to each other, so they would end up becoming not only twin sisters, but friends.

“What techniques did the authors use to bring the static characters, Lynn and Caroline, to life? How did they affect the overall novel?”Both of the authors in Jacob Have I Loved and Kira-Kira used other characters around them to bring them to life.
For example, in Jacob Have I Loved, audiences see who Caroline is from Sara Louise’s perspective. However, if a person were to really think about it, readers only have one point of view of who Caroline truly is from someone who apparently hates her, Louise. Readers understand Caroline to be a perfect girl who is prettier than her twin sister, a girl who is more talented, and a girl who is just better at everything in general. Audiences get to know Caroline from Louise’s perspective and because of this, they get to know who Caroline really is. Caroline comes to life with her perfect being. This affected the novel, Jacob Have I Loved by giving the novel a good conflict. Like, if Caroline happened to be another dynamic character then there would be too much conflict.
In Kira-Kira, the author, Cynthia Kadohata, brings Lynn to life by having the other characters describe her, just like the book Jacob Have I Loved. Audiences know Lynn from the perspective of Katie. Lynn seems to be the perfect role model who cares for everyone and everything around her. Lynne is brought to life through her sister Katie. Katie describes Lynn to be smart, pretty and just overall a good person. Lynn affects the novel, Kira-Kira by showing her little sister why certain things happen in life. Lynne is Katie’s example.
My question is: What would happen if Lynn and Caroline were both dynamic? Or in other words, what would happen if Lynn and Caroline did not exist in either novels?

“Do you believe there is more to the sisters than we saw because we were limited to Sara and Katie’s view of them?”Yes, I do believe there were more to the characters than meets the eyes. Both novels are written in first person. And because they are written in first person audiences only have one perspective on who Lynn and Caroline are. However, if the novels were written in third person, maybe readers could get to know Lynne and Caroline better and from more than one point of view.

RE: carolina1717 Do you think that Katie felt more mature because she took the initiative to rebuild her family? Why or why not?
Yes, I do believe there was a liberating feeling when Katie took the initiative to rebuild her family. Only because Lynn is dead and Katie is now taking the opportunity to take charge and be the older sister, which involves maturity. I think that she did feel more mature in a way.

MemberIn Jacob Have I Loved, the author used Caroline\’s perfection to bring her to life. She had a bossy and delicate appearance to her. Her perfection was used to make Sara feel as though she was less than her. This made Sara feel jealous of Caroline and even hate her. She affected the overall novel by making Sara feel rejected and making her want to leave the island.
In Kira Kira, the author made Lynn a very loving and caring character. Lynn served as a role model for Katie. The author used her sickness to force Katie to become more responsible .
What impact did Sara and Katie have on Caroline and Lynn?

\”Would you say that Caroline and Lynn had to be broken or brought to a point of need and humility in order for the main characters Katie and Sara Louise to mature?\”I would say Katie and Sara Louise had to be brought to a point of desperation in order to mature. Katie needed to be desperate enough from Lynn\’s sickness so she could be forced to take care of Sammy and try to keep the family together. Sara\’s desperation was caused by how the family rejected her. She needed this to mature and leave Rass Island.

“Why did each pair of sisters treat each other so differently?”Sara and Caroline treated each other so differently because they have very different personalities. Caroline is a seemingly perfect, fragile, girl and Sara is a rejected, desperate girl. Lynn and Katie treat each other differently mostly because Lynn is maturing as a young women, while Katie is still too young to understand what she is going through.

MemberHi, this is Emily Olhoeft.
The authors were able to display the true characteristics of Lynn and Caroline through the eyes of their sister\’s. When Lynn was leaving Katie out, Katie showed how she had hurt her feelings, and how Lynn was being mean. Additionally, when Caroline was being self-centered, Sara showed how neglected she felt, and how she hated how Caroline received everything she wanted.
Leaving Lynn and Caroline as static characters allowed the author to really expand on the feelings of Sara and Katie. If they were all dynamic, then there wouldn\’t be a focus in the book. In other words, the main themes would all become scrambled into one huge mess. Therefore, Caroline and Lynn were the perfect piece in both novels to display characteristics in Katie\’s and Sara\’s lives that couldn\’t be shown otherwise. If Sara actually tried to bond with Caroline, do you think they would\’ve maybe become good friends? Or was there no chance for a good relationship?

\”What impact did Sara and Katie have on Caroline and Lynn?\”Katie impacted Lynn in the way that she was always there for her, and Lynn knew it too. Even though they came to disagreements at times, they still knew in their hearts that they loved and cared for each other, and that was a comfort to them both. If Katie never looked up to Lynn, then Lynn never would\’ve been able to encourage Katie to achieve great grades and actually have goals for her life. They were a helping hand to a each other through every difficulty that arose.
Furthermore, Sara never really tried to impact Caroline\’s life, and that was the problem. If Sara actually tried to hang out with her sister, and understand what her passion\’s were, then maybe would\’ve actually been able to get along. Unfortunately, instead of trying to become involved in Caroline\’s life, Sara tried to stay as far away from it as possible.

\”What would happen if Lynn and Caroline were both dynamic? Or in other words, what would happen if Lynn and Caroline did not exist in either novels?\”If Lynn and Caroline did not exist in either novels, it would have played a huge advantage in Sara\’s life, or a huge disadvantage in Katie\’s life.
If Lynn did not exist, Katie would never have received the encouragement to achieve good grades, or go to college. Katie never would\’ve been able to look up to someone for guidance, or have a helping friend to give her advice along the way. Lynn not only gave Katie a future, but life long lesson\’s that Katie could use for the rest of her life.
On the other hand, if Caroline did not exist, then maybe Sara would\’ve been the focus in her family. She maybe even would\’ve ended up marrying Call. Her life could be completely different, in the way that maybe she would\’ve never felt the need to work hard for money since she would be completely spoiled like her sister.

MemberThe two relationships of the two sets of sisters drastically differ from each other, almost being polar opposites.
The author of Jakob Have I loved used the extreme hatred of Wheeze to better show all of the aspects of Caroline\’s character. Louise would often commentate, in her mind, all of the things about Caroline\’s life that she despised such as how perfect her and her life was. Through her harshness towards her sisters nature we can see the how the person who, in another story might be the main character, in another light.
In Kira Kira, it is quite the opposite. Katie loved Lynn very much because she thought she was so perfect. All of her traits are highlighted in the light that she is so great rather than evil.
It is interesting to see how someones outlook on things can drastically change how they treat others.July 31 at 4:38 am #6153lukelomeli

Although Lynn and Caroline were static characters, the various effects the author made them have on the protagonists brought these two characters to life.
In Kira-Kira, Lynn serves as a role model for Katie. Katie looks up to Lynn because she is intelligent, kind, and most importantly, her older sibling. She strives to be more like Lynn throughout the novel. Even though Lynn died, the memories that were produced throughout her life were cherished by her family. Katie retained her sister\’s advice, and performed better in academics. Lynn changed each member of her family\’s lives for the better.
In Jacob Have I Loved, Sara Louise feigns happiness for her sister\’s success primarily. Eventually, she cannot handle that her sister steals everything from her. Whether it be attention, love, or friends, Caroline inadvertently takes everything from Louise. The anger and sadness building up inside Louise is induced as she confides in her mother, and she departs from the island as a result.
My question is: What kind of a life would Louise have lived if Caroline died in infancy?
