If Sara actually tried to bond with Caroline, do you think they would\\\’ve maybe become good friends? Or was there no chance for a good relationship?

I think that perhaps they would have become really good friends much like the sisters in Kira-kira ,but it is not assured because of Louise\’s jealous nature. Caroline was snobby at times to Louise, but enough to deserve all the hatred she got. It was more so the fact that she got what she wanted then that she did not spend enough time with her. It could go either way.

I forgot to ask a question in my above post so here:
Do you think the story in Jakob Have I loved would have been more interesting if told from Caroline\’s point of view due to her being more of a protagonist type?

My question is: What kind of a life would Louise have lived if Caroline died in infancy?

I think that perhaps the early life of Louise could have been better. She would have gotten more attention that she deserved and had more chances to succeed at life. This is of course if events were to have been similar minus Caroline interfering to make her life worse. Later on she perhaps may not have chosen to become a doctor, but I\’m sure she would have been happy with her life.

\”What impact did Sara and Katie have on Caroline and Lynn?\”

Sara had a negative impact towards Caroline, as she was always feeling animosity towards her for being the perfect daughter, leaving herself to be pushed to the side.

Katie, on the other hand, loved Lynn, because Lynn put an effort into helping her little sister and teaching her.

Caroline was a static character, yet she was still an important character to the story. The fact that Sara hates her sister made Caroline an important aspect of the book. Sara was constantly bagging on her sister since her sister was the \”perfect\” sister and everything seemed to revolve around her. It created animosity from Sara towards her sister.

Katie and Lynn were the exact opposite of Sara and Caroline. They were almost inseparable. Katie loved and adored Lynn, who she thought knew everything. Lynn was that classic big sister who helps out her sister with everything. She was a major impact in the story with her becoming sick, and her parents fawning over her, which created stress for the whole family.

    My question is:
How would things have changed if Lynn had survived her illness?

“Why did each pair of sisters treat each other so differently?”

The personalities were much different between them all. Caroline did not put the time and energy into her little sister, while also stealing the spotlight for herself. Sara hated her for it, and felt like an outcast. Her feelings towards her sister were much different than Katie\’s towards Lynn.

Lynn had helped and stuck with her sister in an effort to protect and teach her little sister, which in turn gave her Katie\’s complete confidence in her older sister.

How did the treatment that the sisters received from their parents affect their relationship?

In Kira-Kira, the Takeshima parents devoted themselves to a life of labor. They had no time for their children. This affected Katie and Lynn, because they realized that their sister was all that they had. This caused the relationship of Lynn and Katie to become robust, and the mutual love between them is clearly depicted throughout the novel.

In Jacob Have I Loved, the Bradshaw parents give an advantage to Caroline from a young age. The parents treat her much differently than Louise. Louise competes for attention, but to no avail. The lack of attention causes Louise to feel desolate. The desolation she feels eventually turns into the detestation of her sister.

Would things have turned out differently for Sara Louise if Caroline had fought back?

I believe so. I think Sara Louise despised Caroline\’s silence while she yelled at her more than anything. If Caroline would have fought back, they would have eventually gotten over it, or the bout would have been settled by their parents.

RE: lukelomei-\”What kind of a life would Louise have lived if Caroline died in infancy?\”

I believe Louise would have enjoyed her childhood much more if Caroline died. She would not have been filled with jealousy and bitterness for her sister or acted as if she were angry with the world. I think she would have made more friends and feel more loved by her parents. She would not have had to work to get extra money for Caroline\’s music lessons. I believe she would have been much more snobby. She always looked down on Call. If Caroline had not been born, I believe she never would have become friends with him. I think she still would have been an awful person, just in a different way.

In both Jacob Have I Loved and Kira-Kira, the sisters in the novels play major roles. The author highlights the importance of these characters by presenting them through the eyes of their sisters with either a deep hate, or abounding love.
Katie, the main character in Kira-Kira, has an admiration for her older sister Lynn. She raises her up to the standard of a best friend, as well as a mother-like figure. Lynn teaches Katie everything she knows. Katie always looks to her older sister for support, making a lasting impression on the reader that Lynn is important. Throughout the story, the reader’s love for Lynn grows alongside Katie’s, so Lynn’s death in the end of the story is more impactful. Lynn affected the overall novel because she played a huge role in raising her little sister. Also, if she had not been sick, Katie and her family may have had the chance to live a better and more comfortable life.
In Jacob Have I Loved, the author takes a different approach on presenting the sisters. Sara Louise, although older than her sister, has always come second to her. Therefore, Sara Louise’s life is completely centered on trying to outshine her sister. Her hatred towards Caroline is obvious throughout the novel. Caroline affected the novel as a whole because of their ongoing sibling rivalry. Sara Louise thinks she finally has something that Caroline doesn’t have: friendship with Captain Wallace. To her dismay, Caroline’s charm takes over and takes that away from her. Also, in the end, Caroline and Sara Louise’s best friend, Call, get married. Sara Louise feels defeated that even her childhood friend would end up favoring her sister more than her.
Answering Abbie Lee’s question: How did the treatment that the sisters received from their parents affect their relationship?
In Kira-Kira, Katie’s relationship with her sister Lynn is strong because of their lack of parent support. Her parents work for the majority of the day, so ultimately Lynn plays the role as Katie’s mother, as well as her sister. This strengthened their relationship as a whole because of the support they gave to each other.
In Jacob Have I Loved, Sara Louise and Caroline’s complicated relationship was a direct result of the treatment they received from their parents. From the moment Caroline was born, just minutes after Sara Louise, she stole the spotlight. Caroline’s complicated birth and health problems to follow constantly pushed Sara Louise into the background. Caroline became first priority at all times in her parent’s eyes. This lack attention built up jealousy and bitterness in Sara Louise over the course of her life towards her perfect sister.

    My question is:
How would Sara Louise and Caroline’s situation have changed if they switched roles with Lynn and Katie? In other words, if Caroline was dying of an illness, (besides her random bouts of sickness already present In Jacob Have I Loved) would either of the sisters actually try to repair their relationship, or would Sara Louise feel even more resentment for her sister demanding too much attention?

In Jacob Have I Loved, Katherine Patterson described Caroline as the \”perfect\” twin by detailing her accomplishments. Caroline may have been a static character, but her achievements caused her to receive more attention. This caused Sara Louise to become jealous for attention, and influenced the choices she makes.

In Kira-Kira, Cynthia Kadohata also presented the \”perfect\” sister. However, Katie looked up to her older sister, Lynn. Katie found herself trying to please her sister or always agreed with her thinking. When Lynn began to grow up and mature, Katie took notice. During the time when Lynn\’s health began to decline, Katie took on new responsibilities which increased her maturity.

How would the novels ended if Caroline and Lynn had been dynamic characters?

Sorry, not Caroline, Sarah Louise and Lynn.

    Hello all,

Caroline and Lynn are static, but their impact on the changes and development in their sisters was built upon this foundation. Lynn’s constant kindness, positivity, gentleness, compassion, and intelligence encouraged and inspired her sister to do her best. Katie had always admired and idolized her big sister, and saw her as being perfect. Katie wanted to be just like her sister and to follow in her footsteps. Therefore after the loss of her sister her goal was to honor and live for her sister. Caroline was, in her sister’s opinion, the perfect favored twin. Louise realizes eventually that the things she wants in life are possible but that it was her putting limitations on herself, not her sister. These two novels show how static characters are sometimes used by authors to develop and grow the main character(s).
Question: What relationship is there between the nature of the comparison between two siblings and parenting?

First of all, I love your question and its creativity. I was thinking about this after finishing reading both novels. Sickness and illness often lead people to rethink and consider their decisions in life and their relationships with others. If Caroline had become ill, I think that Louise would have confronted her true pain much sooner and would have come to realize that her sister was just different than her, and that she was the only person holding her back. Reconciliation is often reached when the realization of the limited amount of time left is present.
Question: How would the sisters of Kira-Kira lives be different if they had been the same age like the twins of Jacob Have I Loved?

Well thank ya;)In response to your question, the dynamics of Lynn and Katie\’s relationship might have changed slightly. While Katie might admire her sister for her intellect, the maturity rate would be more balanced if they were the same age.

What kind of a life would Louise have lived if Caroline died in infancy?
If Caroline died, Louise might have felt less of a need for attention since she would no longer have to compete for her parents approval. However, Sarah Louise\’s parents would have had to come to terms with loss.

Re: What techniques did the author use to bring the static characters, Lynn and Caroline to life?

Lynn is brought to life because of how much Katie adores her and how much Katie wants to be like her. Lynn teaches Katie how to do most of the things that she does in her daily life. Lynn is katies best friend. She is always there for Katie. Lynn plays the most important part in Katies life and therefore that brings Lynns character to life.

Caroline plays the important part of having Louise always being the les important child out of the 2. Louise is always trying to find ways to top Caroline. Caroline helps give Louise the determination that she has and shapes who Louise is and who she is going to become. Theefore Carolines character comes to life and plays an important role.

I agrre with Haileigh in that fact that Lynn is a dynamic character because lynn changes throughout the story and she plays such an important in the story.

I agree with Jesue in the fact that Katie had to take on a lot more responsibilty when Lynn came down with the disease and caused Katie to mature much faster.

Without family tht cares about you, the results could end up bad. What conditions in the family would make it the worst?

Although both sisters are in the novels are static, their presence in their sister\’s lives is what makes them important static characters.
Sarah Louise started to live with hatred because Caroline was so \”perfect.\” This shapes Sarah Louise into being the person who needs other companionship to fill her own loneliness. Caroline wanted to help and do things, but she usually only performed in what she was talented in which made her seem perfect. Sarah Louise never tried to attempt anything so she always thought that she was failure compared to her sister.
Lynne on the hand was very important to Katie. She loved Katie, and Katie loved her back. Katie started to revolve her life around Lynne. When Lynne died, Katie did feel like she wasn\’t as important as Lynne until she started to work hard. For example, she got better grades and that made her parents proud. Katie learned from Lynne, and she used that knowledge to please her parents. Lynne was a role model that Katie could look up to.
My question is, \”Was Caroline truly a selfish person despite what Sarah Louise went through?\”

Would things have turned out differently for Sara Louise if Caroline had fought back?

I think it would have because then there parents would have gotten involved. When the parents would have to listen then Sara could have told her parents how she truly felt about Caroline.

“Do you think that Katie felt more mature because she took the initiative to rebuild her family?”

Yes. Because even before Lynne died, Katie was taking care of Sammy. Katie realized how Lynne must have felt when she was being taken care of. So after Lynne died, Katie started to do more for her family to make up for Lynne\’s death. By doing all these extra chores without someone telling her to do it, she was already mature.

What techniques did the authors use to bring the static characters, Lynn and Caroline, to life? How did they affect the overall novel?

Patterson brought Caroline to life, by Louise constantly talking about her. Louise is always talking about how she hates Caroline and her feelings toward Caroline. Even though Caroline is not in every scene in the novel, through Louise we get to know a lot about her.

Kadohata brought Lynn to life by Katie always talking about her much like Louise did with Caroline, but Katie loves Lynn unlike Louse. We hear good thought from Katie and the fun she would have with Lynn.

My question is if Louise had a good relationship with Caroline and if Lynn had a bad relationship with Katie, how would this change the end of the novel?

What kind of a life would Louise have lived if Caroline died in infancy?
I think Louise would never have had to feel jealously and she would have never thought she was in someone’s shadow. I am sure that her mother and grandmother would talk about her from time to time, but they would have nothing to compare Louise to. Louise might have had the chance to go to a music school instead of Caroline.
