\”Was Caroline truly a selfish person despite what Sarah Louise went through?\\\”
I do not think that Caroline was truly selfish. I believe it was all in Louise’s head. In the novel, Caroline had used some of Louise’s lotion. I do not think Caroline was trying to hog all the lotion, but that she was just trying some on.

Both Lynn and Caroline were brought to life by how Sara Louise and Katie described them and how greatly they were affected by them and their decisions.
We learn about Lynn and Caroline and understand their importance to each story by how both Sara Louise and Katie descibe them and think of them. Sara Louis describes Caroline as being perfect but very selfish. By knowing this, the reader understands why Katie feels so unloved and wants to become someone on her own and not be thought of as unimportant. Therefore the ending of the book is created when Sara Louise goes to the mainland and starts a new life for herself because of Caroline\’s character. In contrast,Katie constantly talks about how perfect and smart Lynn is in a good way. By Lynn being described like this, the story then revolves around how Katie and Lynn\’s relationship changes as they get older and go through trials. In the end, because of how much Katie looked up to Lynn, she decides to do her best in life and to make the best of things to make Lynn proud.

If Caroline and Lynn weren\’t static but were dynamic characters, how would Sara Louise and Katie\’s character change?

\”do you believe there is more to the sisters than we saw because we were limited to Sara and Katie’s view of them?\”

Yes, I do believe there was more to the sisters than we saw because both stories were told in the first person, limiting our understanding of every situation and character to what the narrator\’s view on these things are. For example, Sara Louise might have been exaggerating, like we all do sometimes, about how awful her sister really was and might have left out some of the good things that she had done or the nice parts of her personality. Likewise, Katie was young while Lynn was alive, making her be prone to believing everything her older sister says and also exaggerating how perfect she was. For example, when she says that Lynn was a genius and she knew she was because when she aksed her she said yes, that doesn\’t really make her a genius. This makes the readers have to find out for themselves if she really was a genius by reading that Lynn got good grades, which doesn\’t exactly mean that she is a genius.

\”How did the treatment that the sisters received from their parents affect their relationship?\”

The treatment that the sisters received from their parents greatly affected them positively and negatively. For Sara Louise and Caroline, they were affected negatively by how their parents treated Caroline like she was the most important person in the world and how they seemed to forget about Sara Louise unintentionally. This made Sara Louise feel like she wasn\’t worth anything and made her angry at Caroline. In Katie and Lynn\’s case, their parents treated them equally and with the same amount of love even though Lynn was smarter and wasn\’t usually bad. This made Katie and Lynn\’s relationship great and didn\’t make Katie be resentful of Lynn.

Lynn was brought to life because Katie looked up to her. Lynn was shown to have practically raise Katie, she taught Katie her first word, she always played with her, they shared their secrets with each other. They seemed to be inseparable. Lynn became notice because Katie’s was brought up by Lynn, even when she was sick ad had ignored Katie she still tried to help her become happier and feel comfortable.

Caroline came to life because of her perfection and Sara Louise’s obsession over her. Caroline just happened to have the talent for and personality everybody loved, but Sara Louise made her popularity bigger by repelling everybody and spewing jealousy for her sister. Sara Louise’s life negatively revolved around her twin as she was always thinking of her and her perfection.

My question is, did the relationship between the sisters have any reflection on how they were treated by their parents?

I don’t she was as selfish as Sara Louise made her to be she just had more chances in life that she took advantage of and was friendlier than Sara.

“What kind of a life would Louise have lived if Caroline died in infancy?”

I believe Sara Louise would have lived a happier life where she got more attention from her parents and didn’t feel as if she were competing with her twin

The author of Jacob have I loved, Katherine Patterson, used the dynamic sister to emphasize Caroline\’s personality. Patterson constantly mentioned both Caroline and Sara Louise. She especially brought forth their relationship between each other. Sara Louise\’s life was altered by the works of her unchanging sister. She did not receive certain privileges that her sister was given such as going to an advanced boarding school and receiving extra music lessons. Sara Louise became a bitter, tempered person because of the jealousy and emotion that she had towards Caroline.

Lynn, being the static character of the two sisters, was identified by her sister. At the start of the novel it was Lynn who helped Katie. Towards the end of the book, Katie was the one taking care of her sister. Even though the novel was written in Katie\’s point of view, Kadohata still succeeded to have Lynn bring out a side of Katie that no one else could. Lynn influenced Katie to act mature and become an independent person. After Lynn\’s death, Katie shined as her own character apart from her older sister.

Do you think Sara Louise enjoyed having her mom live with her at the end of Jacob Have I Loved?

Sara Louise would have probably lived had a similar childhood despite her sister being present in her life. She would still love the sea and hate school. Louise would have the same interests and core personality, but some small parts of her would be different. Her parents could give her more attention and she would not have the same bitter attitude towards life.

Did the relationship between the sisters have any reflection on how they were treated by their parents?

In Kira-Kira, the girls\’ parents were out-of-touch with their lives. They were constantly working and trying to make ends meet. Since the relationship with their parents was not great, it made Lynn and Katie become better friends. They looked out for each other because their parents were not there to do that. Lynn and Katie\’s relationship prospered because of the dependence they put on one another.

In Jacob Have I Loved, Sara Louise and Caroline\’s relationship suffered partially due to their parents and household environment. It seemed as if they did not have a deep or meaningful relationship with their parents. Their parents were present in their life, but they drew a distinct line between child and parent. Caroline always got her way; she was the golden child. Had her parents made situations be more even-scaled, they could have gotten along better.

Jacob I Have Loved brings Caroline to life with her perfection and her talented singing and her innocent beauty that did not go unnoticed. It also helped that her sister was the complete opposite of her. Sara was tough and loved to ocean, she like to fish, and was not bothered by the dirt or smell of fishing. The opposite personalities of Caroline and Sara both reflected on them, causing them both stand out. Caroline though, was seen as the perfect one getting more attention and thought towards her rather than Sara.

Kira-kira brings Lynn to life mainly through her sister. Katie loved Lynn and admired her. Lynn was extremely bright and a leader, while Katie lacked both qualities. Katie wanted to do everything her sister did and live with her in California. Katie showed the impact and the life that Lynn brought throughout the book. While Katie\’s characteristics brightened Lynn\’s, Lynn also stood out more when she became sick having everything focus more on her.

If both sides of the story, Lynn\’s and Caroline\’s, were told would their characters become more sympathetic to the reader?

Would things have turned out differently for Sara Louise if Caroline had fought back?

I think things would have turned out differently if Caroline fought back. I think it would have allowed Sara to see another side of Caroline. That Caroline was not so perfect. I also think it would have helped Sara because she says how much it bothered her when Caroline did nothing to fight back.

I think Sara would have felt more at ease and important without the competition of a perfect sister. It would have also prevented her from going out to the mainland and become a nurse.

Although Lynn and Caroline were not main characters, the authors brought them alive in each story. Their sisters had big impacts on their lives as well as their parents.

In Jacob Have I Loved, Sarah Louis hated her sister. She could not stand to be with her. Hate is a very strong word that most times people say, but don\’t mean. Why would someone hate their sibling? I believe that the author brought Caroline to life through her parents. Yes they loved Sarah, but they didn\’t really show it as often as they did to Caroline.

In Kira-Kira, the situation with the sisters is different from Caroline and Sarah Louis. I feel like the author showed Lynn being brought because the story was told by Katie. If the story was told by Lynn\’s parents, it would not have put the same emotions into your heart as it did with Katie or between the two sisters.
My question is, Do you think if Lynn would not have gotten sick, their sister bond/relationship, would have been different?

Do you think that Katie felt more mature because she took the initiative to rebuild her family? Why or why not?
Yes, i do think Katie felt mature. Her whole life showed her needing to always depend on someone else to do the work for her. She saw no hard work in anything because everyone, especially her sister did all the hard work. When Lynn became sick she depended on Katie to help her which made Katie mature.

How did the treatment that the sisters received from their parents affect their relationship?
Both parents showed that they loved their daughters, but in different ways. With Sarah Louis and Caroline, her parents loved both of them, but sometimes they favored Caroline because of all her extraordinary abilities. For Lynn and Katie, their parents were not around as often so Lynn would teach Katie things without her parents always looking out. Lynn and Katie formed a strong bond because Lynn was the one who Katie looked up to and Lynn looked out for Katie.

    Hi this is Dylan Thorin.

I believe Louise\’s hatred for Caroline gave Caroline life in Jacob Have I Loved. Louise constantly thought about Caroline and how perfect she was. We learn mostly everything we know about Caroline from Louise\’s thoughts about her.

Lynn and Katie were inseparable throughout the book kira-kira. At first, they did everything together and loved each other dearly. Though Lynn found other friends Katie constantly thought about Lynn and how she was doing with her new friend.

My question is, without Amber, would Lynn still have matured at the rate she did?

\”Do you think if Lynn would not have gotten sick, their sister bond/relationship, would have been different?\”

I believe so, without the sickness Katie wouldn\’t have negative thoughts about her sister. Even though she may have not meant it, Katie did say she hated her sister. That would not have happened if she had never gotten sick.

\”If both sides of the story, Lynn\\\’s and Caroline\\\’s, were told would their characters become more sympathetic to the reader?\”

I definitely think that we would be more sympathetic to Lynn and Caroline. Caroline, for example, May not have meant to hurt her sisters feelings with her comment of truth. Even though it really hurt Louise, Caroline purpose probably did not mean to hurt her feelings.

Both authors use jealousy and perfection to draw attention to the static characters.

Patterson brought Caroline to life with Sara Louise\’s jealousy towards her perfect twin. She despises how Caroline receives everything that she wants. Sara often feels abandoned, unwanted, and lost in her sister\’s shadow. She is always in Sara Louise\’s thoughts, and a majority of her actions are made revolving around Caroline. In this way, Caroline, although static, is one of the key factors in the novel.

In contrast, Lynn and Katie seem to adore one another; often times worrying, helping, and relying on each other. Throughout the story, Katie\’s every thought, action, and decision are made in regards to Lynn. She believes that Lynn is perfect and does whatever she can to help her sister. As she matures, Katie uses Lynn as a role model and strives to be more like her. She is a pivotal character in the novel as she unknowingly shapes who Katie ultimately becomes as a person.

Both of the books show how a static character can play an important role in the plot. Their influence, whether positive or negative, bring them to life as their characteristics shape the story\’s ending.

My question is: how would the story turn out if it was told from the other sister\’s point of view?
