\”Was Lynn a round character or a flat character? How about Caroline? Can you describe either of them in a single sentence?\”

I think Lynn was a round character, while Caroline was flat. Lynn showed a wide display of emotions as the book progressed. She adored Katie, wanted the best for her sister, but also scolded her often. She showed that she was bossy, frequently telling Katie what to do and even planning her future out for her. Sometimes she was a bit greedy, making selfish wishes and craving a large house. She shows sadness and anger, and at times she seems snobbish. All of these different, complicated emotions make her round and complex. On the contrary, Caroline shows no depth to her character. She is always perfect, all the time. She\’s very simple and could easily be described in a short statement, thus making her a flat character.

\”What kind of life would Louise have lives if Caroline died in infancy?\”

I believe that she would have been much happier. All of the attention, love, and devotion given to Caroline would then belong to Sara Louise. Without Caroline, she wouldn\’t feel like she\’s living in her sister\’s shadow. I definitely think that she would live a better life.

“Do you believe there is more to the sisters than we saw because we were limited to Sara and Katie’s view of them?”
Yes I do. Every story has more than one side and these two stories are limited to their perspective. Maybe some of the things described were more drastic or less drastic. However, even though the stories are limited to their perspective another perspective introduced is the readers. As a reader, you can read past the point of view of the author based on your own presuppositions. Thank you for your question.

Question: What would Kira Kira be like from their younger brother Sammy\’s perspective?

    Hello, this is Justin Lewis.

In both Jacob Have I Loved and kira-kira, the authors use foil characters to reinforce the flat characters.

Paterson\’s characters are twins that are complete opposites. The comments made by Louise makes the reader utilize both Caroline\’s and Louise\’s mentalities as well as the origin of them. The Yin and Yang balance out, giving the audience a brighter, more complete picture of what happens and the biases that occur.

Katie praises Lynn in almost every page, which emphasizes her life as a major role in kira-kira. She feels like that kindred mother that picked up the baby in a basket on her doorstep and raised her. Though she does not tell the story, it certainly stresses that her life is essential to much of Katie\’s joy.

If the novels switched the narrator with their counterpart, how would the books change?

\”Why did each pair of sisters treat each other so differently?\”

Many family members, mainly parents, strongly influence their offspring\’s mind. Abusive parents make the children less social or trusting.

A neglected child like Wheeze grows jealous for attention and easily upset, while Caroline becomes a slightly spoiled, but simultaneously mature, righteous lady.

Unlike in Jacob Have I Loved, both parents love both of the children equally, despite one being more successful in school. From this, Lynn is an equal to Katie, which she greatly appreciates. They could never have bonded like they did without such wonderful parents.

\”Do you think if Lynn would not have gotten sick, their sister bond/relationship, would have been different?\”

I don\’t think so. Katie already adores her older sister, so she would always obey, worry, and care about her. The relationship only spiraled downward for a moment when they \”hated each other.\” What the illness did change was Katie\’s maturity. She has to endure the worry for Lynn for an unprecedented amount of time. The day Lynn died, Katherine had grown into a \”big girl\” to take Lynn\’s place as the oldest sibling. One example of this is when she starts doing the dishes and cooking for her parents every night. With great loss comes great responsibility.

Within each story the static character is brought to life through characteristics.

Lynn in \”Kira-Kira\” is a heart-felt girl whos thoughts are traveled through out the story through her diary. We see her grow physically and mentally. We begin to become attached to her as she grows and then eventually dies.

Caroline in \”Jacob have i Loved\” is a beautiful girl with many talents. We follow her life through the jealous eyes of Sarah. We begin to long for her dream just as much she does.

How else do these characters come to life in the stories?

In \”Kira-Kira\” Lynn was a static character and although in some novels static characters are unnoticed and not as important, in \”Kira-Kira\” Lynn was not. The author brought out many things throughout the story that made Lynn\’s character known. One being she was always there for Katie. When she needed help, Lynn was always there. And two being she got very sick and ended up passing away. Because of this, it affected the outcome of this story. As Lynn started to get more and more ill, Katie realized she needed to help and be there for her. This was the start to her maturity finally coming through but, after Lynn had past, Katie grew up and matured. If Lynn had not gotten sick, Katie would not have become someone who learned to do things for herself. Most of Katie\’s childhood life, Lynn babied her, but when Lynn could not do that for her anymore, she grew up.
Lynn as a static character played a major role even though she herself did not change.

In \”Jacob have I Loved\” Caroline was a static character, but again, she impacted this story. All of Sara\’s life she was in the back round. Her \”perfect\” sister Caroline was favored by almost by almost everyone. Because of this, Sara became stronger. More and more she wanted to leave Rass Island and focus on her dreams. If Caroline\’s character had not been who she was or acted the was she did, Sara could have easily found an excuse to stay on Rass.

Question: If Sara actually tried to bond with Caroline, do you think they would have maybe become good friends? Or was there no chance for a good relationship?

I do believe that the fact Sara did not attempt to communicate with Caroline and tell her how she was feeling was a big part in the outcome of this story. There definitely was hope for Sara and Caroline to become friends and get along but because of the actions Sara took changed that. Again, if Sara chose to communicate with her sister, things could have been completely different.

Question: What impact did Sara and Katie have on Caroline and Lynn?

In \”Kira-Kira\” Katie definitely had an impact on Lynn but Lynn also had a major impact on Katie. If Lynn had not gotten sick she would not have impacted Katie in the way she did, and because Lynn impacted Katie, Katie impacted Lynn. After Lynn got sick Katie was always there for her and Lynn definitely saw that and saw the maturity growing in her. Throughout both of there lives they were always there for each other.

In \”Jacob have I Loved\” Sara never really impacted Caroline or wanted to, but that was the challenge. If Sara actually talked and interacted with Caroline, things would have been different.

What kind of a life would Louise have lived if Caroline died in infancy?

It all varies on your imagination. I would hope she would be treated as Caroline was, but the world will never know.

What if the girls were orphans?

    RE: hshipway

How would the novels ended if Caroline and Lynn had been dynamic characters?

Well, these questions have no right answers. All I could say is that the story would have a lot of useless information.
