@Jacclewis Some instances of where one act of moral decay leads to another would be when Tom went to the valley of ashes and went to his mistress myrtle and asked why dont they divorce and responded back in another lie by saying she was catholic when she was clearly not.

Fitzgerald really exemplifies the American dream through the novel because he shows different aspects of it and how people want to achieve their dream such as Gatsby who wanted Daisy and changed everything about himself to gain her love.

The 3 symbols of change shown in The Great Gatsby are the green light at the dock, which symbolizes the american dream or in this case Gatsby’s or James Gatz want for Daisy which causes him to change his story over and over to let her acknowledge him. The next symbol in the great gatsby is the valley of ashes the dumping ground of trash and where the moral decay thrives and where the simplest looks of tiny lust change into adultery changing the moral standing of its society, Tom with mistress Myrtle the oh so fat but sensual lady. The west and east egg also represent change in America and how people can make their way in society and make it on their own enriching the american dream. Are there any other examples where the American Dream is amplified?

I think the novel was effective as it was because St John was a reappearance of Helen and also if she had mentioned Helen I believe it would not have been as mysterious as leaving St. John in the ending.

    • I believe why Bronte ended with St. John instead of Jane was because she wanted to show how Jane would have ended up and to leave the reader with not just the happy aspect of the story but also leave the impression of trials that could have been. If Jane had married St. John it would not have been out of love, but rather just to get married and not tempt him from his work. John was Helen he taught her about acceptance and love, and also convicted her for not marrying him. If St. John was actually in love with her how do you think the story would end? Mr. Rochester still or St. John?

@Parbie: I think he both loves Jane and also love to provoke Jane about other woman because he also wants to know her feelings about him since it’s quite obvious he loves her.

Mr. Rochester in my opinion is very awkward. If the book were to be titled “Awkward” he would be the reason why. His character was made to make the reader feel awkward .Though he is one of the lead characters he is not much of a leader himself. When Mr. Rochester is around Jane he makes her feel very awkward compared how Jane is kind of very expresses herself and blunt. Mr. Rochester does not know how to express himself but acts rather like a Jr higher… Charlotte Bronte made Mr. Rochester to show that he is not perfect or handsome like most main character but he was made to show Jane is still falling for him making their awkward love story a twisted fairy tale. Since Mr Rochester completely different from most main leads he was meant to leave an impression on the reader. What other reasons why do you think Mr. Rochester loves Jane?

Re: julianarenee72 How does Helen Burns bring out key character traits in Jane?
Well Helen Burns is the exact opposite of Jane she is her foil and is a strong willed character and wise beyond her years, she does not speak out of turn as Jane does often and is respectful and takes a punishment and turns it into a happy lesson of life.

The minor characters are able to look through the same perspective as Jane being the same age and attending the same all GIRL school. Through Helen Jane’s polar opposite or foil we are able to see the traits that Jane does not possess that Helen does. For example, Jane would not stand for being whipped by a stick but would rather much like to smack the teacher with it unlike Helen who was patient and strong. Due to the male population she has met being terribly cruel to her, her perspective on them has warped because of them mistreating her.
Question: How else is Helen foil to Jane?

@ Loiswazhere i believe the story would not have much of a plot but rather a bleak ending with no lesson learned like how in achilles and balders mothers overlooked things.

Both deaths of Achilles and Balder were very ironic. Achilles death was caused by his mothers carelessness of holding his heel in the water trying to make him invicible. If achilles were a normal man he would have just been wounded but his mother was his ultimate downfall and was shot in his heel or his Achilles his only venerability.Balder mother was also his downfall she collected everything that would hurt balder but overlooked the mistletoe and balder was stabbed in the heart with a mistletoe by the jealous loki. I think their mothers were ultimately the end of them and that irony of their deaths really twisted the story. Do you think the stories would be much of a story if their mothers did not overlook things?

RE: ReyBryce i would not go to oracles but rather just try not to live without regrets. If i went to an oracle and knew about my death i would probably try to evade it even though it would be inevitable because it would happen sooner or later.

What Oracles were, were prophets whose prophecies would be 100% chance of it happening if a prophecy was trying to be stop it would come true eventually. For example one of the more well known prophecies that the oracles foresaw that Cronus would be overthrown by his children. He ate everyone of his children except for Zeus who over threw him. I believe the Ancient Greeks felt that they need oracles to know about their future. If the Greeks did not have the oracles how would that affect their lives?

I believe the reason why we ‘mythologize’ or put things into myths is because of our need to explain what we cannot. Inside we all have craving to know how things come about whether from how we are born from where are born in. All the myths have to do with certain factors of life such as why do we have seasons why is there night and day storms and plenty of other things they could not explain then. I believe one of the main reasons why we create myths is for the sole purpose of explaining the unexplainable to satisfy the thirst that lies within.
Question: So what kinds of ‘myths’ have we made from trying to explain the unexplainable?

@ Aprilmayjune to answer your question i believe it will but not significantly besides to know who we are today we must learn about how were in the past by looking at stuff like old myths and stories passed down to generations.

In response to bekaboo859: I believe that in Kira kira Lynn was jealous of the fact that her sister had a job to do while all she could do was laze around at home and that Katie could actually walk and run and eat with her family.

In Jacob Have I Loved, Katherine was jealous of her sister Louise because of her intelligence and the fact that Louise was as pressured by everyone around to be the perfect daughter.

I agree with slogger even if her sister lnn was not bed ridden she would still have been jealous of everything she did not have such as beauty and intelligence.

Q: What other Signs of Jealousy did you spot through the novels?

In Jacob Have I loved, Louise always was jealous of her sister , Katherine her sister had the spotlight on her all the time and Louise every time would be in her shadow festering her jealousy for her sister. Her Jealousy and hate even lead into her dreams such as when she dreamt of her sister’s death. Though she never performed any means of revenge she always plotted it in her mind.

In Kira-Kira, Katie’s sister Lynn who is intelligent and pretty becomes ill but she is not jealous enough to the point as Louise who was planning her sister’s demise but rather put out her anger on her siblings.

In Kira Kira, Katie is the younger sister(before Sam) of Lynn had much more freedom and less responsibility than her sister. Relying on sister Lynn she was very carefree and ignores what is really out in the world. Soon as her brother Sam is born and sister fallen ill she is given responsibility and is more restricted than she was. Katie is driven to the truth that she has to grow up through the obstacles she faces.

In Jacob, Have I Loved, Louise the main character struggles with living in her sister’s shadow not realizing she can move own her on will power. Her struggle is mainly on her inside. I believe Louise matured when she was given a chance to go to college and takes it unlike she did before when her mom gave her an opportunity to go to a boarding school. Did the other sisters mature in the stories as well?

    RE: Nalderson
it is good to have foil characters in a story or else the story might not progress like in a Single shard if Ajima was not caring and was more like Min i believe that Tree-ear would have not gone because he would have been discourage over the comment Min made about not teaching him cause it was against tradition to teach someone who was not their son.
